Are you all business, or just “busyness?”

December 1, 2009

Mompreneur, you wear 42 different hats in your all-consuming business. You do everything from fulfillment to customer support, from marketing to PR, from business development to office supplies. (Argh— how can I be out of magenta ink AGAIN?!)

To the untrained eye, you’re lookin’ mighty busy. But is all that “busyness” showing up in your bottom line? Because, let’s face it, if your business isn’t making money, you’re nothing but a frustrated, drained, deflated mom with a really expensive hobby. Not pretty. In this new world of ever-emerging business models and social media platforms-du-jour, it can be tough to figure out where to place your time and attention. We need to build profitable, sustainable businesses that work— they grow, they thrive, and they GIVE us energy, not suck us dry.

This past year, I’ve asked myself all kinds of tough questions about what all my busyness has amounted to. Sometimes I was on track, and other times, it didn’t amount to a hill of beans. I simply REFUSE to be hit-or-miss like that— my time and energy is limited, and I want to have enough left over to bake cookies and chase my kids around the dining room table, or it’s just not worth it.

If you’re feeling like you’re chasing your tail, if you’re having trouble focusing, if you’re on the brink of packing it all in, join me for my very first Mompreneurs Coaching Circle. It’s all about creating a business that works for you (not the other way around!) and having the accountability you need to stay focused and grow, baby, grow. Yes, in this economy. Yes, even if you only have 3 hours a day to focus on your business.

There are only 4 spots left… is one of them yours? Once this group is full, it will be closed for 6 months, so this chance won’t come by again until the spring of 2010. Where will your business be by then? Hopefully, not in the trash bin with the empty ink cartridges. Again, not pretty.

As the mother of a 2-year old, it’s hard to stop myself from comparing my daughter’s development to that of other kids her age. Better than anyone else, Carley is able to cut through to what is important and help me enjoy the developmental stage Hannah is going through right at that moment, rather than focusing on what she is or is not doing yet. — Lauren S., Advertising/Sales & Hannah’s Mom.
